A student demonstration advocating free education escalated into running battles with the police in the capital Santiago. The protesters refused to be pushed back by law enforcement officers who attempted to disperse them with water cannons. Protests for free education started in Chile in 2011, but have escalated in recent weeks with both students and teachers taking to the streets.
