Omwa Ombara was a journalist in Kenya for 14 years, including serving as a bureau chief at The Standard, one of the largest newspapers in Kenya. She reported on corruption in the 2007 presidential election and then covered the violence that followed. She was approached by the International Criminal Court to be a potential witness and even though she did not meet with them, she began receiving anonymous threats. She fled to the United States in 2013.
