Iran test-fires 'smart' missile that can hit Israel

TEHRAN ? Iran has successfully tested a new precision-guided, long-range missile, Iranian state-run media reported.

CNN reports that the new missile, dubbed Emad, which means "pillar" in Farsi, is a surface-to-surface missile and a variant of Iran's existing Shahab-3, but with a maneuvering reentry vehicle to improve system accuracy.

Unlike Iran's existing long-range missiles, the Emad can be precision-guided until it reaches its target. It has a range of 1,700 kilometers and is accurate within 500 meters of the target. It can carry a 750-kilogram payload and is scheduled for deployment some time after 2016.

The Emad would be Tehran's first precision-guided missile with the range to reach its enemy, Israel.

Anthony Cordesman, a researcher at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said in a report that Tehran has been steadily working to improve its existing missile technology, which had "poor accuracy" and "uncertain reliability."
