ST.CLOUD, MINNESOTA — A sheriff's deputy and a suspect died early morning Sunday following an altercation in a Minnesota hospital where the suspect was being treated, the Star Tribune reported.

The struggle started in the suspect's room at St. Cloud hospital, where 60-year-old sheriff's deputy Steven M. Sandberg was monitoring him.

According to CNN affiliate WWCO, suspect Danny Hammond had been receiving treatment at the hospital. Twin Cities reports that Hammond was a suspect in a domestic dispute and was not handcuffed or under arrest at the time of the incident.

In the early hours of Sunday, at about 5:15 a.m., Hammond got out of bed and managed to acquire Sandberg's gun, before firing several shots and killing him, the Star Tribune reported.

After the shooting, two hospital security officers and another sheriff's deputy rushed to Hammond's room. He was subdued with a taser and died from cardiac arrest despite efforts to revive him.

Hammond's criminal history includes felony convictions for burglary and fleeing custody, according to Twin Cities. Sandberg leaves a wife and daughter behind.
