These are the remains of Zhenya, a teen mammoth who was born around 37,000 years ago. By a strange set of coincidences, an 11-year-old boy named Zhenya Salinder found the mammoth in 2012 nearly perfectly preserved in the permafrost of the Taymyr Peninsula, in Russia's far north, complete with full skeleton, fur, flesh, and even layers of fat. Scientists confirmed the find soon after and decided to name the young mammoth, believed to be 16-years-old at the time of death, after the young boy who discovered him.
