New Delhi, Jan 23 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Zafar Islam on Saturday said Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Jamia Millia Islamia are universities being funded by the Central Government. He added that the NDA Government’s move to strip AMU and JMI of minority status was according to the Constitution. He said giving minority status to central universities like JMI and AMU would not help the institutions in any way. Politicians who are opposing the move are only trying to gain political mileage. Janata Dal United (JD-U) leader KC Tyagi, on the other hand, accused the government of being adamant to gag the freedom of minority institutions. He stated that both AMU and Jamia were established before the Constitution came into existence. Tyagi added that the government's decision to strip the minority status of the universities is a conspiracy against the minorities. Tyagi also said that he, along with other MPs, would launch a signature campaign and approach President Pranab Mukherjee.
