El actor francés Michel Bouquet, da vida al ilustre pintor impresionista, Auguste Renoir. Un gran conflicto bélico sacude Europa en el año 1915. Tras sufrir la pérdida de su mujer y con las dolencias de la edad a cuestas, la desdicha del pintor se incrementa cuando recibe malas noticias del frente: su hijo Jean ha sido herido. Con el objetivo de favorecer su recuperación, Auguste le ofrece pasar un tiempo junto a él en su casa en la Costa Azul.
