Based on a series of miniaturized history lessons held at the open mic nights in Paris from December 2012 to March 2013, A Brief History Of Postwar French Popular Music is a cultural studies lecture in verse. Framed as a poem in tight alexandrines (in English), the lesson is punctuated with live renditions of referenced songs (in French). Expect a subjective, somewhat insolent and completely out-of-the-box analysis of the French musical tradition, a sweeping portrait from the underground scene in the cellars of Saint-Germain-des-Prés to the contemporary music industry.\r

Vaguely organised as a series of thematic chapters, the poem is an homage to the vibrant, multi-faceted musical heritage known as la chanson française, a heritage intimately tied the French language itself, for better or for worse. The lesson covers a tight selection, from the linguistic gymnastics of Boris Vian to Frances ridiculous Anglo-Saxon pop-star wannabes, by way of Dick Annegarns fantastical themes and of course the fully-rounded, delectable work of Serge Gainsbourg (whose legacy represents the backbone of the series). This night of academic sing-along is your entry ticket into the world of French pop-culture in all its double-edged glory.\r

Issu dune série de leçons miniatures données de décembre 2012 à mars 2013 dans le cadre dune scène ouverte anglo-saxonne à Paris, Des yoyos aux yéyés. Brève histoire de la musique populaire française daprès-guerre se présente sous la forme dun poème rimé en alexandrins (et en anglais), ponctué dextraits de chansons jouées live (en français). Il raconte de manière subjective et décalée la glorieuse odyssée de la chanson française, des caves de Saint-Germain-des-Prés à lindustrie du disque contemporaine.\r

Vaguement structuré autour de chapitres thématiques, ce poème se veut un hommage à la richesse et à la variété de ce patrimoine, qui doit sa force comme ses faiblesses aux potentialités merveilleuses de la langue française. Des prouesses langagières de Boris Vian aux épigones les plus ridicules des icônes pop anglo-saxonnes, des fantaisies Dick Annegarn à léquilibre magnifique de lœuvre de Serge Gainsbourg qui en constitue la trame, cette performance veut offrir loccasion dune immersion dans la culture populaire française, dans ce quelle a offert de meilleur - et de pire.\r
