5. Adrian Lamo
Lamo was arrested in 2003 after he managed to hack into the servers of the New York Times, Yahoo! an Microsoft. Lamo had become quite popular in the tech world for helping set up security systems for web servers. However, after the New York Times filed a complaint against him, a warrant was issued for his arrest. He also discovered and reported to U.S authorities that Bradley Manning was leaking classified information on Wikileaks.
4. Jonathan James
At 16 years old, James became the first juvenile to go to jail for hacking. He first hacked into the BellSouth server, but his real trouble started when he broke into the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, an agency in the federal government. He stole usernames and passwords from several military personnel. He even stole important software from NASA! After a six month sentence, he committed suicide in 2008.
3. Gary McKinnon
In 2002 Mr. McKinnon was accused of perpetrating the "biggest military computer hack of all time". McKinnon was accused by the United States of posting a notice on the military's website: "Your security is crap". After the September 11 attacks in 2001, he deleted weapons logs at the Earle Naval Weapons Station paralyzing munitions supply deliveries for the US Navy's Atlantic Fleet. He was never tried.
2. Kevin Mitnick
At the time of his arrest, Kevin Mitnick was the most wanted computer criminal in the US. He began his career in hacking at 15, when he hacked into the L.A Bus system to obtain free bus tickets. Later he broke into Pacific Bell’s server and obtained hundreds of cell phone users data to mask his location from the law. He was arrested and convicted in 1999 to 6 years in prison for 14 counts of wire fraud, among other charges.
