Ferrari Challenge - http://ebay.to/1GfbPr0
Since it's release in 2008 there has been a fair bit of discussion, argument and criticism of Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli, surrounding the difficulty of the game and how it compares to other driving games on the Playstation 3. With this in mind I decided to run my own rather unscientific test to address the issues that many players seem to have had with the game. Yes, I'm very late to the party, but for us gamers on a budget, any game we can pick up for around £5.00 merits a second lease of life.
If you play with a controller, things are probably very different - these test runs were carried out using an original Logitech Driving Force, Force Feedback wheel (yes the old PS2 wheel - remember we are gaming on a budget here).
I have split the test into three Trophy mode races and three separate videos, parts 1.2 & 3.
Game Settings - All Driving Assists Set To Max (ABS, TC & SC) Racing Line On.
Damage On.
Difficulty Level Beginner.
Vehicle Ferrari 348 TB with standard default set up (for Trophy races there is no pit area for car setup).
(Note - Damage model in this game is pretty irrelevant as it is only visual and has no effect on a car's performance whatsoever, much like GT5 but at least you can beat your car up if that's your thing).
Part 1 - Mugello Circuit
Trophy races have no qualifying so you will always start the first of your three races at the back of the grid. What is immediately noticeable in the first video is how I can scythe through the field almost at will. The AI drivers are pretty slow and non threatening. Once passed, they make little attempt to fight for their lost position. They are also fairly passive, not exhibiting the aggressive blocking that occurs on higher levels of difficulty. With all assists on max, you can clearly see that failing to drive smoothly carries little penalty - I can ignore the squeals of protest from the tyres, enter corners too hot and brake mid turn, I can overtake cars on the outside relatively easily. Off track excursions are also fairly easy to recover from, and once back on the tarmac, chasing down and passing opponents is accomplished within a few corners in most cases.
Some of the sloppy and reckless driving was intentional, just to see what I could get away with and to illustrate my points - some were genuine mistakes though ;-)
In contrast to the Intermediate difficulty level, it feels like a totally different game. If you have watched any of my other Ferrari Challenge gameplay videos, you can clearly see that in this video I am not having to fight for grip or make constant adjustments to my steering input as I do on my regular settings. I wouldn't go as far as to say that the car drives as if it's on rails, but compared to the intermediate or higher settings, I would have to say that it certainly feels that way.
