Hey, welcome back to moviequips highlights. I'm Stephen Bourne and here are your new movie highlights for April 15th to the 21st:
First up, BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT is a dramatic comedy starring Ice Cube, Regina Hall and Common, and is the second sequel of the 2002 hit Barbershop. Chicago's favourite South Side barber shop continues to change with the times, but its decades-old values are still needed when crisis hits the neighbourhood. Barbershop: The Next Cut screens here in Ottawa at Cineplex Odeon South Keys and Cineplex SilverCity Gloucester.
CRIMINAL is a thriller from director Ariel Vromen, starring Kevin Costner as a death row inmate given a strange second chance. When a top CIA field operative is killed during a London mission, his memories are transplanted into the mind of a psychopath enlisted to finish the job. Criminal co-stars Gary Oldman and Gal Gadot, and screens at both Landmark Cinemas and at select Cineplex Cinemas here in Ottawa.
THE DARK HORSE is a 2014 dramatic biopic from New Zealand, written and directed by James Napier Robertson, starring veteran screen actor Cliff Curtis. Curtis portrays speed chess champion Genesis Potini, whose manic struggles were eventually off-set by becoming a community mentor to at-risk kids. The Dark Horse screens here at Ottawa's ByTowne Cinema.
Next up, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan plays double duty in the South Asian psychological thriller, FAN. Obsession turns ugly when a screen idol's young look-alike admirer makes a pilgrimage to crash the star's birthday. Fan screens here with English subtitles at Cineplex Cinemas Ottawa and at Landmark Cinemas Kanata.
THE JUNGLE BOOK is a Disney live action-CGI remake of its 1967 animated movie that itself was adapted from British author Rudyard Kipling's 1894 anthology of the same name. Set in India, an orphan child raised by wolves finds his fragile co-existence brings some harsh lessons taught by the jungle's wild inhabitants. The Jungle Book screens here at all Landmark and Cineplex Cinemas.
ONE MORE TIME is a 2015 dramatic comedy from writer-director Robert Edwards starring Oscar-winning screen veteran Christopher Walken. Here, an aged crooner's hopeful comeback seems doubtful when his estranged daughter and her floundering music career land at his doorstep. One More Time screens here at Ottawa's Mayfair Theatre.
And lastly, PRISONER X is a Canadian sci-fi thriller based on American author Robert Reed's 2008 story, Truth. Canadian Screen Award-winner Michelle Nolden stars as a CIA interrogator tasked with unlocking the secrets of a suspected terrorist from the future. Directed by Gaurav Seth - who also directed the 2001 hit, A Passage To Ottawa - Prisoner X screens in Ottawa at Landmark Cinemas Kanata.
Also coming up, La Nouvelle Scène's AFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL rolls April 20th to the 22nd. Find its 10th season of films screening in French at http://www.nouvellescene.com
