Personal rendition (piano solo) of Thelonious Monk's "Round About Midnight", Bob Haggart's "What's New ?", Oscar Hammerstein II's "Can 't Help Lovin' Dat Man Of Mine", to close with Fats Waller's unforgettable "Stealin' Apples" - meanwhile merrily "cycling" through the Circle of Fourths here - kind of a tribute to the late Johnny Guarnieri. As a matter of fact, Mr. Guarnieri was a real master of stride. This challenging number was once hilariously and virtuosely tried out by a “square” Professor Magenbruch (played by Benny Goodman), unexpectedly jamming together with a bunch of jazz icons, in the 1948 movie “A Song is Born”. Fats Waller’s “invention” of kicking up the tempo (first displayed in the last chorus of his 1923 QRS parlor piano roll of Spencer Williams’ tune, the foxtrot "Your Time Now") is more or less imitated here.
