Flex Dance Music is Brooklyn's own dance music. What began as a type of music accompanying flexing—a dance style originating from Brooklyn characterized by elements including bone breaking, gliding, and pausing—has in recent years progressed into a distinct genre. Inspired by the original essence of flex music, which began as dense dancehall mixes with layers of riddims and sound effects, producers have begun writing original compositions with booming 808s and chopped vocal samples.
To contextualize our Flex Dance Music session with Epic B, Uninamise, Hitmakerchinx, and DJ Aaron, we sat down with the four pioneers of Brooklyn's club sound as well as dancer Jason Cust to break down the evolution of flexing and FDM. We begin with the origins of flexing—the dance style which inspired the music—and delve into the genre's evolution into its current form.
