Last month the Iraqi government recovered the eastern part of Mosul, a major victory against the Islamic State.

Despite the insecurity, people remain hopeful in the lead-up to the next offensive, and children have started to venture outside.
The Tigris, less than 500 feet wide in some points, is the front line.
When ISIS took over Mosul in 2014, many residents fled to escape the militants’ rule.
