Mauritius (Moris in Créole), formerly the Isle of France and Île Maurice in French, is the main island of the nation of Mauritius. It is located in the southwest of the Indian Ocean, in the heart of the Mascarene Islands, between Reunion to the west and Rodrigues to the east. The population is approximately 1.2 million inhabitants and is divided into several communities. The majority of Mauritians are crossbred with Indian (65.8% ) or Creole or mestizo (27.7%) origins. There is also a minority of mulattoes, "white Mauritius" (2%), and Sino-Mauritians (3%). Muslim Mauritians are either Indian or Arab-Indian origin.
The capital of Mauritius Island is Port Louis, located in the northwest of the island. Mauritian Creole is spoken on the island, as well as French and English. The religion in Mauritius Island is of a Hindu and Tamil majority (50%), with Muslim (20%), Christian (15%), and Buddhist (2%) minorities, but there is no official religion in view of the diversity of the population.Mauritius Island was uninhabited before its first recorded visit during the Middle Ages by Arab sailors, who named it Dina Arobi. However, the island might have been visited well before by sailors of ancient times; wax tablets were found on the shores of Mauritius by the Dutch, but since the tablets were not preserved, it cannot be said whether they were of Greek, Phoenician or Arab origin. In 1507 Portuguese sailors came to the uninhabited island and established a visiting base. Diogo Fernandes Pereira, a Portuguese navigator, was the first European known to land in Mauritius Island. He named the island "Ilha do Cirne". The Portuguese did not stay long as they were not interested in these islands.
The total land area of the country is 2,040 km (about 80% the size of Luxembourg). It is the 180th largest nation in the world by size. The Republic of Mauritius is constituted of the main island of Mauritius Island and several outlying islands. The second largest island is Rodrigues with an area of 108 km and situated 560 km to the east of Mauritius Island, the twin island of Agalega with a total land area of 2,600 hectares and situated some 1,000 km north of Mauritius Island. Saint Brandon is an archipelago comprising a number of sand-banks, shoals and islets. It is situated some 430 km north-east of Mauritius Island and is mostly used as a fishing base. The nation's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) covers about 2.3 million km of the Indian Ocean, including approximately 400,000 km jointly managed with the Seychelles.
