Two-thousand sheep were guided through the streets of Madrid on Sunday to preserve ancient herding traditions that are under the threat due to the expansion of urban environments. Shepherds annually defend their right to graze cattle on routes that are placed on land where open fields and woodland once stood before Madrid expanded into the city it is today. City traffic was stopped to allow the sheep to march their way past the city's famous landmarks and monuments.
