Egyptian women are fighting back against sexual assault through technology and innovation.
Shadw Helal, 21, developed a mobile app to protect women. The “rescue app” is activated by voice command or an on-screen button it sends a distress call to volunteers who are close by and ready to help.
Cairo is considered one of the most dangerous megacities for women, where 99.3% of women have reported being harassed.
While the app is in its early stages, many are already expressing interest in becoming volunteers.
