The Aam Aadmi Party or AAP, headed by Arvind Kejriwal, today denied that a person seen on camera on Monday tossing notes into the air in apparent celebration after a poll victory has anything to do with the party.
The man was apparently celebrating the victory of AAP leader Nand Kishore Beniwal, who was among those elected to the board that governs the Delhi cantonment area or army base in the capital of about 11,000 acres. The board has eight members and is tasked with managing public health, street lighting and other civic facilities.
"The person seen throwing money is neither a member or office bearer of AAP," said the party's Raghav Chaddha. Reports that the cash-thrower was its winning candidate, Mr Beniwal, had AAP leaders facing embarrassing questions.
The three major parties - Congress, BJP and AAP - contested the election; the BJP won five seats, the Congress won two and the AAP won one. The result will be used by them to gauge the mood of voters as the capital gets ready for assembly polls on February 7.
Since AAP was founded in 2012, this was the first time it contested the Cantonment Board election.
