This is the first lesson of a series for beginners to the bass. The series will take the beginner bass player through the basic technique that they need to know and then quickly apply that learning in the context of playing real life basslines. More information - including detailed PDFs - can be found at my website: http://www.how-to-play-bass.com This lesson covers tuning the bass - there are three ways to tune the bass: using a digital tuner, the open string method, and using harmonics. The beginner should get into the habit of tuning one string with a digital tuner and then tuning the rest of the bass using either of the other two methods - it's a great way to use a necessary chore at the start of each practice session (tuning) in a way that will help develop musicianship (by improving the ear).
