Hurricanes Are Becoming
More Powerful, Study Says The report can be found
in 'Proceedings of the
National Academy of Sciences.' It suggests that climate change could be linked
to why the intensity of storms has increased. Lead author James Kossin, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientist,
says more information is needed. James Kossin Spanning 1979 to 2017, the analysis
used figures collected from satellites. Over this time period, maximum sustained winds
within storms were shown to have
increased in strength. Results also show it is becoming increasingly likely that
tropical storms transform into major hurricanes. Last year was considered a normal season
but the term "normal" for hurricanes
is becoming more extreme. 2019 saw the emergence of Hurricane Dorian,
a category five storm and Humberto, a category three. NOAA is expected to reveal its analysis
for this year on May 21, shortly before
June 1 when the season starts up.
