As bitcoin shoots up in value, so does the energy consumption as people are motivated to mine more bitcoin. Professor Yang Xiang says all computers have to approve a bitcoin transaction which consumes a lot of electricity and the carbon dioxide emission is around 37 million pounds. He says that's equivalent to how much New Zealand emits.
