Desperate for food and work, more than 4,000 Afghans are reportedly crossing the border into Iran daily, many of them entering the country illegally. In Herat, Afghanistan, it has become a common practice for smugglers to transport migrants for US$16 and collect the rest of the US$400 fee when migrants find work.
