A summer of drought in Europe, floods in places like Pakistan and Nigeria and searing temperatures all around are just the latest illustration of what's at stake at the COP27 climate summit in Egypt.

Despite the peril we all face, deals that put common interest over national rivalries seem harder to achieve as nations compete for limited resources in an energy crisis compounded by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.Will rising tensions between the planet's top two polluters – the US and China – slow down or speed up the transition away from fossil fuels?
