Partial Lyrics:

Rough Night off the Campsite

Carl was sitting behind his desk typing up a storm
On his raise me or I’ll resign letter
Directed at the leader of the European press
I told him that wages sure do fetter
When I saw him on the way to the post office
And he raised up the envelope and waved
Laughing and saying that’s certainly a thought
Then he tore up the envelope and behaved
In a way I hadn’t seen him before
He asked me for some paper for his typewriter
Running off from me and last I’d heard
Had put something together that was a firelighter

I stumbled upon a drunken captain and his army
Complaining that the ground beneath was worthless
Even though for it everyone would steal and kill
And his commanders were plotting like a game of chess
I asked him why he didn’t just quit
And he looked at me like I had been unclothed
In the presence of twenty three young nuns
And this was the reason I’d be so loathed
He told me the other side felt the same way
And I could see their fires in the horizon
They were getting ready for what was coming
That’s what happens when everyone buys in

Edgar was hanging out amongst all the birds
That he was tossing bread to at the lake
I felt compelled to join him on the bench
And as I was fidgeting I felt it start to shake
He shook his head at me rather annoyed
And started to tell me about some pipes and wines
I was curious and started to follow him
But felt the presence of a thousand signs
I remarked about his prowess in masonry
As well as all that he could keep under the floor
And he just laughed a little strangely
So I left quickly before the first pour

The war was still going on by the pounding of the drum
I saw the sick and exhausted crumbling
Surrounded by their sticks of shame
The captain was mocking all those bawling
Gotta have something for the bullets to hit he said
But I didn’t feel all that enticed by those searching
The countryside for misplaced silver and gold
The mines were filled by those who quit researching
And the town was filled with phantoms
That I couldn’t shake off unless I woke
The air was clouded by smoke and dust
And I had to wander out the place quite broke

He was camping out in a tent when I passed by
Because he didn’t like the current form of politics
But when he started telling me what he thought
My ears started ringing from all his language tricks
As I started to leave the campground he grabbed my arm
And I tried to put up a little bit of resistance
He was hanging on to the worst ways of thinking
If nothing else I guess I should admire the persistence
Because when time and being are your only modes
You won’t swallow the pill others must take
And if you’re clinging to dying ideology
You’ll probably live your whole life as a rake

I knocked the sand from my feet and entered
Into the first place I could to get out of the heat
Balloons and confetti filled up the place
In there she was setting up a meet and greet
I walked up the front because I wanted a taste
Of all the food and drinks
