The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a supersonic fighter-bomber that was developed in the late 1950s and entered service in the early 1960s. It was one of the most versatile and widely used combat aircraft of the Cold War era, serving with the air forces of the United States and 11 other countries. The F-4 Phantom II had a distinctive design with a large nose cone, twin engines, and two vertical stabilizers. It was capable of carrying a variety of weapons, including air-to-air missiles, bombs, rockets, and a 20 mm cannon. The F-4 Phantom II set several speed and altitude records, and was also the first U.S. fighter to be adopted by both the Navy and the Air Force.
