Earth’s rotation is a result of its formation in the early solar system. The solar system formed around 4.6 billion years ago from a giant cloud of gas and dust called the solar nebula. This cloud collapsed under its own gravity, and the material within it began to spin faster and faster. As the material condensed and formed into planets, it retained this spinning motion.
