Tense scenes unfolded in the Bahamas House of Parliament.
Opposition MP Shanendon Cartwright threw the ceremonial mace out of a window.
Cartwright’s action came after the speaker of the house refused to let him speak
during a heated debate about a police corruption scandal.
Throwing the mace out the window has historic significance in Bahamian political history.
In 1965, the leader of the opposition performed the same action in a push for electoral change,
in an event known in the Bahamas as ‘Black Tuesday’.
