Union members rally against Trump's civil service orders on Capitol Hill
Unionized workers on Tuesday, February 11, gathered on Capitol Hill, joined by Democratic leaders, to protest President Donald Trump's plans to reduce staff and downsize the federal government.
The House of Representative's minority leader, Hakeem Jeffries, and Maryland Senator Angela Alsobrooks joined leaders of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) and the AFL-CIO in the shadow of the Capitol, calling on Congress to protect federal civil service jobs and shield workers from political interference.
Union members were also protesting billionaire Elon Musk's oversight of an unofficial government office, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), set up by President Trump. AFGE has filed a lawsuit to block a DOGE program offering seven months of severance pay to government workers who agree to resign. A federal judge has put the program on indefinite hold pending a hearing.
