In a key political development ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, the AIADMK and BJP have officially rejoined forces, with the alliance set to contest under the leadership of former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS). This announcement, made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Chennai, signals a strategic shift for both parties following a period of separation and internal conflict. Shah assured that the BJP would respect AIADMKās autonomy and focus on cooperative governance, hinting at the formulation of a common minimum programme.
The alliance recalls past successes, including the 1998 Lok Sabha elections, where the coalition secured 30 of 39 seats. While BJP leader K. Annamalai has been replaced by Nainar Nagenthiran as state chief, Shah clarified the leadership change was unrelated to the alliance talks. After a poor performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, both parties seem determined to avoid a repeat by reuniting.
Though EPS is not officially declared as the chief ministerial face, political watchers believe the NDA will project him. Shah also strongly criticized the DMK government for corruption and misgovernance. With this renewed alliance, Tamil Nadu is set for a high-stakes political contest in 2026.
