3 regions to get first taste of P20 per kilo rice
The national government will begin selling rice at P20 per kilo starting next week under the 'P20 Program,' Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. announces in a press conference at the Cebu Provincial Capitol on April 23. The program will first roll out in Regions 6, 7, and 8 through participating local government units (LGUs), with a nationwide expansion planned. Laurel said the government and LGUs would shoulder the price difference between the subsidized rate and the current market price of P32 to P33 per kilo, with an allocated budget of P3.5 to P4.5 billion. During his 2022 presidential campaign, then senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. vowed to bring down the price of rice to P20 a kilo. Midway into office, consumers have yet to benefit truly from that promise.
