On September 28, 2023, it was illegally cut down, sparking widespread outrage. A teenage boy and a man in his 60s were arrested but later released; the motive remains unclear.
The incident led to an outpouring of grief and tributes. Experts have since collected seeds and wood from the tree in hopes of growing saplings or creating a memorial to preserve its legacy.
