‘Maniac’ (also known as ‘Sex Maniac’) is a 1934 American independent exploitation horror film directed by Dwain Esper. Loosely inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's ‘The Black Cat’, the film follows Don Maxwell, a former vaudeville impersonator who works as an assistant to Dr. Meirschultz, a mad scientist attempting to reanimate the dead. When Don kills Meirschultz, he assumes the scientist’s identity, leading to a descent into insanity. The film features bizarre medical experiments, exaggerated psychological themes, and surreal horror elements, making it a cult classic among early exploitation films. Despite its low budget and unconventional storytelling, ‘Maniac’ has gained notoriety for its over-the-top performances and shocking imagery.
