In a display of exceptional bravery, two Delhi Traffic Police personnel foiled an armed robbery and apprehended two snatchers, despite one of them opening fire, officials said on Monday.
Sub-Inspector Sanjeev and Constable Rahul Nain of Shahdara Traffic Circle acted swiftly after a local resident alerted them about a gold chain snatching near Chetak Complex in Dilshad Garden. The suspects — Imran (26) from Ghaziabad and Warees (35) from Seemapuri — tried to flee on a high-powered motorcycle.
At Chintamani Chowk, Constable Nain kicked the fleeing bike, causing it to crash. As the duo attempted to escape, Imran fired at SI Sanjeev, who managed to overpower and arrest him. Warees, who also tried to shoot, was quickly disarmed by Nain.
Both accused were found carrying pistols and a total of 10 live bullets. Three stolen gold chains and the motorcycle used in the crime were recovered. Preliminary probe revealed Warees has over 40 prior cases.
A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
