‘Beat the Devil’ is a 1953 adventure comedy film directed by John Huston, starring Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones, and Gina Lollobrigida in her American debut. The film follows Billy Dannreuther, a formerly wealthy American who finds himself entangled with a group of swindlers attempting to claim uranium-rich land in British East Africa. As they wait in a small Italian port for passage aboard a tramp steamer, deception, romance, and unexpected twists unfold. Huston and Truman Capote co-wrote the screenplay, turning the film into a loose parody of ‘The Maltese Falcon’ (1941), which also starred Bogart.
