Schubert wrote many songs, but "An Die Musik ("To Music") is one of the most beloved. This recording appears to be the only one in Yiddish. It is sung here by bass-baritone Marc Berman.
The original German version has been recorded many times, by opera singers Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elly Ameling, Bryn Terfel, Gerald Finley, Julian Prégardien, Hans Hotter, Christa Ludwig, Janet Baker, Hermann Prey, Victoria de los Ángeles and Fritz Wunderlich, among others.
This channel mainly records rare Yiddish songs. It is so important that seldom-heard Jewish songs from the past be preserved for future generations. Recording these songs is expensive. With your help, much more of this great music can be recorded and preserved. Thanks so much!
Franz Schubert (1797-1828) wrote "An Die Musik" in 1817, to a poem by Franz von Schober. The score was published in 1827, not long before Schubert's untimely death.
The Yiddish text featured on this recording is by the singer.
Franz von Schober (1796-1882) was a rather dissolute minor poet. He also attempted several other occupations, including acting. Von Schober was a close friend of Schubert.
