Election Commission of India Introduces Mobile Deposit & New Booth Rules for Easier Voting

2025-05-25 0 Dailymotion

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced two major voter-friendly reforms ahead of the upcoming elections. In a move aimed at enhancing convenience and transparency, mobile phone deposit facilities will now be available outside polling stations, allowing voters to safely store their phones before entering the booth. This addresses long-standing issues faced by senior citizens, women, and persons with disabilities who previously had no official provision for mobile storage during polling.
Additionally, the ECI has revised the distance norm for setting up voter assistance booths. Political parties and candidates can now place their booths within 100 metres of the polling station entrance—down from the earlier 200-metre restriction. These booths are used to distribute unofficial voter slips to those who may not have received the official Voter Information Slip (VIS).
Importantly, the prohibition on electioneering activities within 100 metres of polling stations will remain strictly enforced to ensure the sanctity and secrecy of the voting process, in line with Rule 49M of the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961.
These changes will be first implemented in the upcoming Bihar assembly elections as a pilot initiative, with potential for nationwide rollout based on the outcomes.
Stay tuned to Democratic News TV for more updates on these voter-centric reforms and how they’re shaping India’s democratic process. Empowering voters through accessibility and innovation remains the ECI’s top priority as the country prepares for another pivotal election season.
