“Bubbling Over” is a 1934 American musical comedy short film directed by Leigh Jason. The story follows Samson Peabody, a janitor living in an apartment building with his wife, Ethel, and a large group of freeloading relatives. When even more relatives arrive, Ethel finally has enough and throws them out. Meanwhile, a scheming tenant reads Samson’s mail and pretends to be a clairvoyant, predicting the arrival of Samson’s wealthy uncle. However, the uncle turns out to be penniless and a pickpocket, stealing everything from watches to a chicken dinner—and even the clothes off the guests in the final scene. The film features musical performances by Ethel Waters and the Southernaires Quartet, though it has been criticized for its use of racial stereotypes
