The Fox and the Grapes
One bright and sunny afternoon, a fox was wandering through the fields, his stomach growling with hunger and his throat dry from the heat. He hadn’t eaten all day, and every rustle of grass made him hope for something to eat.
As he strolled along, sniffing the air for any hint of food, he spotted an old, tall stone wall stretching across the field. On the other side, dangling in neat rows, were the most luscious, purple grapes he had ever seen. They hung heavy on the vine, plump and juicy, their sweet aroma floating through the air and making the fox's mouth water.
Without thinking twice, the fox crouched low, wiggled his tail, and sprang up toward the grapes—but he fell short and landed with a thud in the grass.
Determined, he backed up a few steps, ran as fast as he could, and leapt again. This time he got closer, but still not close enough. The grapes swayed gently above, just out of reach.
Not one to give up easily, the fox growled and tried once more. He leaped higher than before, his claws stretched out as far as they could go—but the grapes remained untouched, mocking him from above.
Breathing heavily, the fox sat down at the base of the wall, panting and frustrated. After a moment, he narrowed his eyes at the grapes and muttered, “Hmph! Those grapes are probably sour anyway. Not worth the sweat, not worth the fret.”
With a flick of his tail and his nose in the air, the fox turned around and walked away, disappearing into the field—leaving the grapes swaying gently in the breeze, still hanging high and untouched.
Moral:
