Meerut, Uttar Pradesh — A courageous act of loyalty and sacrifice unfolded in Daurala area of Meerut, where a pet dog saved the life of its owner's son by fighting off a venomous Russell Viper snake, ultimately succumbing to multiple snake bites after a 27-hour struggle for survival.
The incident took place on the intervening night of June 3–4 at the home of farmer Ajay Kumar alias Kallu, a resident of Mohalla Rampuri. According to the family, their 5-year-old American Bull dog, Mini, noticed the viper approaching the bed of Ajay’s 23-year-old son Vansh, who was sleeping in the gallery with other family members.
Mini fearlessly intercepted the snake and engaged it in a fight, sustaining 26 bites in the process. Vansh woke up to the sound of Mini's frantic barking and witnessed the dog grappling with the snake to keep it away from his bed. Though bitten repeatedly, Mini managed to push the viper away.
The family eventually captured the snake after a struggle and later released it into the nearby forest. Mini was rushed to Modipuram Veterinary Hospital and later received treatment from a Ghaziabad-based vet. Despite efforts to save her, she passed away after 27 hours.
Mini had been with the family since she was less than a month old and was considered a beloved member. Grieving her loss, the family has brought home a new pup, naming her Mini in memory of their brave dog.
Forest Department DFO Rajesh Kumar confirmed, based on photos, that the snake was a Russell Viper, a highly venomous and aggressive species found in the Sardhana range area. Its bite contains amotoxin that causes rapid blood clotting and can result in death within an hour if untreated.
