Environment exec mulls putting Mayon lighting project on hold
Ronnel C. Sopsop, Environment and Natural Resources assistant director for Bicol wants to put on hold the proposed lighting of Mayon Volcano until a thorough study is done on its impact to biodiversity. The Regional Development Council (RDC) in Bicol, led by Camarines Norte Gov. Dong Padilla, cancelled the proposed P1.25 billion Mayon Volcano Heritage Aesthetic Lighting Project sponsored by party-list Ako Bicol during a council meeting in Legazpi City on June 4, 2025. The decision was reached following strong opposition from the Bicolanos themselves, including tourism officials and environmentalists. The RDC said that there was a need to prioritize more urgent infrastructure and development initiatives in the region.
