A furuncle is an acute purulent inflammation of the hair follicle, sebaceous gland and subcutaneous tissue. The main pathogen is Staphylococcus aureus, which causes tissue necrosis and thrombosis of small veins.
π How does a furuncle develop?
The process begins with a small pustule, then a painful infiltrate forms, a purulent-necrotic plug appears, which opens on its own or under the influence of treatment. After 10-14 days, the furuncle usually heals, leaving a scar.
π¨ Possible complications:
- Lymphangitis, lymphadenitis
- Sepsis
- Abscessing (formation of a capsule with pus)
- Furuncles on the face are especially dangerous - vein thrombosis and meningitis are possible.
π Why is the location important?
Furuncles on the buttocks, neck, face, in the perineum limit movement, cause pain and require special care. Furuncles in the nasolabial triangle are especially dangerous.
Treatment:
At an early stage - iodine, UFO or UHF, antiseptic dressing. Compresses are prohibited. When the furuncle matures, the purulent core is removed. In case of an abscess, surgery is required.
Furuncles on the face are treated only in a hospital! Antibiotics and physiotherapy are prescribed.
