Charred wreckage of Air India plane crash seen as emergency workers extinguish fires

Firefighters and other first responders worked to put out fires at the site of a deadly plane crash on Thursday, June 12, after an Air India jet bound for London with 242 people on board crashed minutes after taking off from India's western city of Ahmedabad earlier that day.

Debris from the plane crash was strewn all over the ground while smoke billowed from burning buildings that firefighters were seen trying to extinguish.

The plane was headed to Britain's Gatwick Airport, Air India said, while police officers said it crashed in a civilian area near the airport. The 242 people included 217 adults and 11 children, a source told Reuters. Of them, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 were Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian, Air India said.

More than 100 bodies have been brought to a hospital in Ahmedabad, local police told Reuters.
