Tesla Urged To Delay Robotaxi Launch By Democratic Lawmakers Amid New State Regulations

A group of Democratic Texas lawmakers has asked Tesla to delay its robotaxi launch in Austin until September, when a new autonomous-driving law takes effect, according to Reuters. In a letter, they said the delay would serve “the best interest of both public safety and building public trust.” Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the launch could “tentatively” happen this Sunday, though details remain scarce. If Tesla proceeds, lawmakers request detailed information on how the company will comply with the incoming regulations. Under current Texas law, autonomous vehicle companies can operate statewide if they meet basic registration and insurance requirements. New legislation awaiting the governor's signature would require these companies to apply for state authorization. Tesla did not immediately comment on the lawmakers’ request to delay the robotaxi launch.
