The Second Epistle to Timothy, commonly known as 2 Timothy, is the sixteenth book of the New Testament and one of Paul’s most personal and emotional letters. Written around AD 66–67, this letter was composed during Paul’s final imprisonment in Rome, shortly before his execution. Unlike his first imprisonment, where he was under house arrest, Paul was now in a cold Roman dungeon, abandoned by many of his companions, awaiting his death. This letter serves as Paul’s farewell message, filled with encouragement, warnings, and final instructions to Timothy, his beloved disciple and spiritual son. It is a letter of perseverance, faithfulness, and endurance in the face of suffering.
Paul begins with a heartfelt greeting, reminding Timothy of his sincere faith, which was passed down from his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois. He encourages Timothy to rekindle the gift of God within him, reminding him that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline. Paul urges Timothy to not be ashamed of the gospel or of Paul’s suffering, but to share in suffering for the sake of Christ, holding firmly to the truth.
A major theme of 2 Timothy is the importance of guarding the gospel. Paul warns Timothy about false teachers, godlessness, and increasing opposition to the truth, urging him to hold on to sound doctrine and to pass it on to faithful men who will teach others. He uses military, athletic, and farming imagery to illustrate the discipline, endurance, and dedication required in Christian ministry.
Paul describes the difficult days ahead, saying that people will become lovers of themselves, greedy, arrogant, disobedient, and lacking self-control. He warns against those who have a form of godliness but deny its power, urging Timothy to stay away from such people. He reminds him that all who desire to live a godly life in Christ will face persecution, but they must remain faithful.
One of the most well-known passages in 2 Timothy emphasizes the authority and power of Scripture. Paul declares that all Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. He urges Timothy to preach the Word in season and out of season, correcting, rebuking, and encouraging others with great patience and careful instruction.
