Protesters burn Trump effigies after US imposes 50% tariffs on imports from Brazil
Protests erupt in Brazil on Aug. 1, 2025 against US tariffs, with demonstrators burning effigies of Trump and Bolsonaro in front of the American consulate in Sao Paulo and the US embassy in Brasilia. The protests, organized by unions and student groups, condemned the 50 percent tariff on Brazilian imports, which was set to begin on Aug. 6. Participants expressed their opposition to US intervention in Brazilian sovereignty and economic affairs. On July 30, the US imposed sanctions on Brazil's Justice Alexandre de Moraes for overseeing the trial of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, accusing the judge of authorizing arbitrary pre-trial detentions and suppressing freedom of expression.
