Lesson #7 – Anatomical Planes
In anatomy, the human body is studied by dividing it into planes. These planes are imaginary lines that help doctors, students, and scientists describe locations, movements, and sections of the body in a standard way.
Main Anatomical Planes
1. Sagittal Plane – Divides the body into left and right parts.
2. Midsagittal (Median) Plane – Divides the body into equal left and right halves.
3. Parasagittal Plane – Divides the body into unequal left and right parts.
4. Frontal (Coronal) Plane – Divides the body into front (anterior) and back (posterior) parts.
5. Transverse (Horizontal/Axial) Plane – Divides the body into upper (superior) and lower (inferior) parts.
6. Oblique Plane – Cuts the body at an angle (not straight).
1. Sagittal – left & right
2. Midsagittal – equal halves
3. Parasagittal – unequal halves
4. Frontal – front & back
5. Transverse – top & bottom
6. Oblique – angled cut
7. Standard reference for anatomy
8. Used in medical imaging (CT, MRI, X-ray)
9. Helps describe movements & positions
10. Universal language for doctors/scientists
