As Israel continues its deadly destruction in Gaza, the governments of Portugal, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have officially recognized Palestine as an independent state. The decision made the number of countries recognizing the statehood of Palestine rise to more than 150. The prime ministers of the 4 nations released statements backing their decision, which had been warned about weeks earlier. The move comes two days before the start of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, where Palestinian sovereignty after decades of occupation and apartheid by Israel will be in focus.
