Former NBA star Paul Pierce is now facing two criminal charges following his recent arrest in Los Angeles. According to court documents, prosecutors have charged the former Boston Celtics player with one count of driving under the influence and another count of driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.08% or higher. The charges were filed two weeks after his October 7 arrest, when police found him allegedly asleep behind the wheel of his Range Rover while stuck in heavy freeway traffic.
The California Highway Patrol reported that Pierce showed signs of being under the influence when officers approached him and that he later submitted to a blood test.
However, Pierce publicly denied driving drunk in a post on Threads dated October 9. He claimed the incident was a misunderstanding, saying he had simply fallen asleep in traffic because he was “old” and “tired.”
“Imagine being stuck in standstill traffic for 45 minutes and falling asleep 🤦🏾♂️,” Pierce wrote. “I took this picture that night because I’d never been in traffic like that before. I’m old, I’m tired, and I fell asleep 🤷🏾♂️. I’m good, y’all—thanks for the love.”
Pierce is scheduled to appear in court for his arraignment next month.
