Hurricane Melissa left widespread devastation across Cuba, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of thousands and destroying homes, infrastructure, and power lines as it tore through the island on Wednesday.

Footage shows flooded streets, destroyed houses, and fallen trees in Santiago de Cuba and Guama municipality as emergency crews clear debris and residents inspect the ruins of their homes.

"All of us helped each other the whole night until morning came, and we went out and saw the level of destruction, which is huge," said one of the affected residents.

Another local shared, "I took out my things, what I could, some things stayed, but the minimum [...] In the end, we are all alive; what was lost was the house, all the walls, the windows."

Guama was among the worst-affected municipalities after the hurricane made landfall early Wednesday as a Category 3 storm on the Saffir–Simpson scale.

According to Cuban authorities, more than 735,000 people were evacuated as a precaution to ensure public safety. This included over 283,000 people from Santiago, 222,000 from Holguin, and 126,000 from Granma. Despite the extensive damage, no fatalities have been reported at the time of publication.
