Cameroon's opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary appealed to his supporters in an address from Garoua on Sunday, calling to hold a nationwide three-day 'ghost town' protest over what he referred to as a 'confiscated' election victory.
"We achieved an overwhelming victory, but through the Constitutional Council and their entire team, this victory is, for the moment, confiscated," he said.
"I therefore ask all Cameroonians, wherever they are, to stay at home for three days to demonstrate their dissatisfaction and commitment to fight until the truth of the ballot box, which we claim, prevails and we can recover our victory," Tchiroma continued.
The announcement comes amid violent post-election unrest across the country, sparked by allegations of electoral fraud and manipulation. Local media report that at least four people lost their lives and dozens sustained injuries amid clashes during the protests.
The 'ghost town' protest is set to start on November 3, following the announcement of President Paul Biya's re-election for an eighth term, extending his rule beyond 40 years.
Biya, 92, secured 53.7 percent of the vote, while Tchiroma Bakary received 35.2 percent, according to the Constitutional Council.
